About Programme
Internal combustion engines were invented at the end of the 1800s and the automobile has become indispensable in today's world. The automotive industry has become one of the leading sectors in our country. Important automotive manufacturers in the world are increasing their investments depending on the development of Turkey in the automotive sector.
Automotive engineers are engineers who can apply basic engineering and design principles at the highest level in every stage of the automotive industry, such as production, design, etc., can conduct sufficient scientific research in terms of new technologies and production techniques in the automotive industry, and can use the knowledge and skills that can take safety measures-comfort even further in newly developed vehicles.
Automotive Engineering Department started its education in the 2010-2011 academic year within the Faculty of Technology, and it is an engineering science that provides opportunities for different industrial applications as well as education in automotive and related fields. Education is carried out in the department with 3 Professor Doctors, 1 Associate Professor Doctor, 3 Doctoral Faculty Members and 1 Lecturer. The language of education is Turkish and the education period is 4 years. The most important feature that distinguishes the Automotive Engineering Department within the Faculty of Technology from the engineering faculties is that the students here do on-the-job training for 14 weeks in addition to their summer internship for 60 days. Most of our students do some of their summer internships and workplace training in the same company for up to 6 months. Thus, it is ensured that our engineer candidate students acquire the skills to apply the theoretical and applied knowledge they have learned in the business field, and qualified personnel are provided to the candidate engineers who have completed the orientation process for the company and learned the operation of the company for 6 months, as soon as they graduate. Most of our students are able to start work right after graduating in the company where they go to workplace training. Thanks to our laboratory and workshop facilities listed below, we make a maximum effort to convey practice as well as theory to our students.
- Automotive-Vehicle Application and Research Laboratory
- Engine Performance Laboratory
- Brake Pad Friction Test Laboratory
- Alternative Engines Laboratory
- Brake Suspension Test Laboratory
- Biofuel Production Laboratory
- Internal Combustion Engines Laboratory
- Vehicle Air Conditioning Laboratory
- Automotive Electrical Electronics Laboratory
In addition, our students have the opportunity to do their internship abroad with Erasmus+ internship program with scholarship, improve their foreign languages and have the chance to have experience about automotive companies globally. Our students do internships and Erasmus activities in countries such as Germany, Italy, Czechia, Poland, Romania, China, which are among the leading countries in the automotive main and sub-industry. The department carries out highly respected academic and scientific studies in the field of automotive and offers a sufficient education opportunity to realize the dreams of automotive engineer candidates with its dynamic and young academic staff for different scientific projects supported by TUBITAK, the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

History
Automotive Engineering Department, AKU Faculty of Technology was founded in 2010, and began accepting students in the same year. Besides the basic engineering courses in the department of automotive electronics, mechatronics, design, safety, dynamic, and internal combustion-external combustion engines, alternative engines and alternative energy sources, such as the courses are given. In department, the language of instruction is Turkish and before the basic engineering training throughout four years, is given orientation training throughout first year to students come from vocational high school.

Admission Requirements
(1) High School Diploma, (2) Placement through a centralised, nation-wide student selection and placement examination organized by Assessment, Selection and Placement Centre (ÖSYM). Candidates gain access to the programmes based on their composite scores consisting of the scores on the centralized exam and high school grade point averages.
|
Higher Grade Transition
The students who have successfully graduated from the department may apply to post graduate programmes in the field of mechanical engineering here and in other universities, as well as other fields accepting student from the field of mechanical engineering.
|
Graduation Requirements
A bachelor's degree in Automotive Engineering is awarded to students who have successfully completed all the courses available in the program (for a total of 240 ECTS), who have achieved a weighted grade point average of at least 2.0 out of 4.00, and who have completed a 60-day professional internship.
|
Occupational Profiles of Graduates
The graduate of the automotive engineering department has many opportunities of employment in a varitey of state and private companies. There are also cases where the graduates setup up their own jobs in various fields of mechanical engineering

Assessment and Grading
The examination, assessment and grading regulations have been set up for the university by the University Senate and the Department of Automotive Engineering is bound by these regulations. Each course is assessed via a midterm exam, a second mid-term exam composed of quizzes, homeworks and assignments, and a final end-of-term exam, with contributions of 20%, 20% and 60% respectively. The marking is made out of 100. Grades of AA to CC are pass, DD to FF fail, and DC is conditional pass and requires a CGPA of at least 2.25 for that term. The details given for each course in the programme include the detailed assessment methods together with a description of the second mid-term exam.
